Multicenter studies have established large core breast biopsies are as sensitive as open surgical biopsies. These biopsies can be performed under ultrasound guidance if the mass or lump is well seen under ultrasound. The biopsy is done under local anesthesia through a very small skin incision, and causes minimal discomfort. Most patients experience only minor bruising and can return to normal activities within a day. Usually four or five samples are taken, which are then sent to Pathology. Results are usually available within 48 hours after the biopsy. In our experience, which confirms findings of larger studies, there has not been a local recurrence or seeding due to the needle tract.

  • Ultrasound guided breast biopsy is much less expensive, less invasive, with less cosmetic impact than open surgical biopsies.
  • Image guided biopsies are extremely safe.
  • Summit Radiology provides extensive experience with ultrasound guided breast biopsies, and all facilities performing these biopsies have received special accreditation by the American College of Radiology.
